Superior Fishing Charters

on the St. Louis River, Port of Duluth, Minnesota

The Fishery, the Fish and the Regulations.

The lower St . Louis River is a world class walleye fishery, holding many different fish species. Some of the species we target are walleye, northern pike, muskellunge, and smallmouth bass. Occasionally a sturgeon can be caught but not kept, state laws prohibit keeping them.

We fish the St. Louis River between the Highway 23 bridge and Lake Superior, depending where the fish are biting. Every year many walleyes are caught over 10 pounds, truly trophy walleyes. The fish migrate into the river from Lake Superior over the coarse of the winter to spawn in the spring. During their migration back to the lake is when the walleye fishing can be phenomenal.

Regulations

Unlike other bodies of water in the state, the St. Louis River has a unique set of regulations.

Walleyes

Northern Pike Muskellunge
(Muskie)
Smallmouth
Bass
Sturgeon
Two (2) walleyes can be kept per licensed person and must be a minimum of 15" in length. This limit has created the fishery, many fisherman have caught and released hundreds of walleyes in a day. Making for some great action and allowing an angler to bring home some of Minnesota's best tasting fish. Two(2) lines are allowed per person on the St. Louis River, I typically do not fish with 2 lines but it is legal. Two (2) Northern Pike can be kept per licensed angler on the St. Louis River. Every year many 20+ pound fish are caught. One (1) Muskie can be kept per licensed angler on the St. Louis River, the minimum length must be at least 40". The St. Louis River is an excellent muskie fishery, on many occasions an angler may see a muskie following a walleye that is being brought in to the boat. The St. Louis River provides for an excellent opportunity to caught trophy Smallmouth Bass. Five (5) can be kept all must be at least 14" in length or more. While an angler can not keep any St. Louis River sturgeon the possibility exists to catch on and then release it to grow even bigger.
